Default Reporting for duty after almost 20 year hiatus, please recommend games

So I was absolutely hooked on Silent Hunter III back in the day. I loved the freedom and the piratic aspect of going out reaving for tonnage. I have a newish microcomputer and am getting back into gaming.

What game would you recommend to scratch the old silent hunter itch? Should I try one of the mods that updates the SH3 graphics? Cold water? UBOAT? Wolfpack?

Some things to consider
-I don't have some top of the line gaming PC
-I really liked the fact you got to know and upgrade your men in SH3
- I don't have just a ton of time and probably don't need something that is way more complicated than SH3.

I would really appreciate any input from you guys I am antsy to get back under the water

SH3 is a good choice, but I will recommend SH4. It's old now, so should run on just about anything, but be sure to check it against your specs, just to be certain.

I like SH4 for the conversion mods, especially Trigger Maru and Operation Monsun, which allows you to play German careers in SH4. Using JSGME it's just a matter of a few mouse clicks to swap between patrolling in U-46 in the western approaches to Seahorse in Luzon Strait.

I think it should be one of these two.

Good hunting. And welcome back.

If I go with a SH4 mod should I run around vanilla SH4 before modding it or will youtube and my experience with SH3 let me pick it up?

Yes, I'd always recommend a run or two in vanilla, so you can see what that is. Then you'll know what you might want to change, and what you do not, which can help you sift through the mod choices.

It can also help you decipher problems and troubleshoot, since if vanilla runs fine you will know what you have added is likely the cause, to narrow it all down.
