I suggest GFO (Game Fixes Only), which is a mega mod designed for adding compatible mods to the stock game.
The major mods are TMO, RFB, FOTRS and GFO. RSRDC is compatible with TMO and RFB and version RSRDC 1.4 is compatilbe with GFO. RSRDC simulates the routes of Japanese TFs and Convoys. It is quite accurate.

The 3D TDC and Radar Range, and the OTC (Optical Targeting Correction) mods are sophisticated mods for manual targeting. If you don't select those, use the Easy Aob mod.
The toughest game out there by far is TMO2.2 combined with with OTC when you elect manual targeting and utilize OTC's real scopes (optional) and Toyyko's Revenge (optional) features. The dds in TMO are tough, but the enemy in TMO with the options selected above will kill you.

This is an EXCELLENT post and it answers just about every freakin' question I had about the current state of SH4 mods. I see that Trigger Maru has been hugely updated, now there's the Game Fix only mod, a campaign mod, WOW! It's incredible, I love this place.
Again, having not touched a submarine game in years, I was a bit lost and wondering where to start over. Thanks for pointing the way, I'll be checking out those mods
