Hopefully the community will forgive necro-posting in this thread but 420+ pages of patrol reports seems worthy of retaining to report the loss of U-447.

The boat, under command of OLzS Erwin Aleve sailed from Bergen on September 7th 1942 to patrol AL42. After unsuccessfully attempting intercepts of two convoys, early on October 4th, contact was made with a large convoy near Rockall in appalling weather, rain, high seas and 15 m/s winds. The opportunity for an night surface attack was there and while getting into position, OLzS Aleve got a reply to his contact report which required shadowing and hourly contact reports. An end-around run brought the boat ahead of the convoy to maintain contact.

Over the course of the next ten-hours, U-447 made nine contact updates, with each being acknowledged by BdU without orders to attack. Gradually as daylight came on and the rain ceased, the range opened to about 6500m. Finally at about 1215 local, the weather suddenly cleared and the boat was charged by no less three escorts. Breaking contact towards the convoy and evading the escorts eventually U-447 assumed a course parallel to the convoy and gradually dropped astern. The plan was to open the range until the boat could surface and do another end around. After some four-hours and at least 50 depth charges, the escorts seemed to have returned to the convoy and it seemed that the boat could surface safely around 1800 local.

Sadly, just after 1630, Cat made an appearance and tread upon the keyboard and it would seem as though at some point the "D" key was pressed and U-447 begin a dive that would remain undetected and result in the boat exceeding crush depth undetected. This is what comes of leaving the game running to prepare beer BBQ beef ribs and losing situational awareness.

We know that at least one U-Boat was lost due to toilet errors but the loss of U-447 to feline intervention is perhaps unique. Take the loss of the boat as a cautionary tale.
