I learned how important it is to go EXTREMELY deep, and break off on the surface right away if my officers detect radar emissions from surface ships. Radar-equipped destroyers and frigates are lethal late in the war. Corvettes with radar can be outrun if you have a Type IX or VII.

Also not to assume the escorts won't detect you if you submerge in front of a convoy. The old "submerge and wait" tactic can be dangerous from 1942 onwards (as it was in real life historically).

Basically, the less I took foolish chances the more I survived. 1939-1940 convoy attacks on the other hand were a turkey shoot - me and my wolfpack even wiped one out 100%. A terrible British naval disaster 27,000 feet over Ohio....lol.

Over Ohio.....great story ! Yes, that's the difference between AOD and SH3 in a nutshell; take foolish chances in AOD, you die. In SH3, not so much.
