Most mods can be directly installed following the folder path. Inside the folder with the mod name should be another folder that says 'Data'. You can just put that Data folder into the main folder and your computer will do the rest.
Now that you know that, don't bother. Instead use
JSGME. It will do it for you, and has the added benefit that if you don't like that mod you can easily remove it again.
The Subsim avatars are built in. They will change themselves with post count, but the only way to have a custom avatar is to make a small donation. Sorry, but that's one of the ways Subsim stays alive.
