IL-2 is quite realistic and unforgiving. Its single-player campaign (at least the default ones) is so-so; the flight model is very good. There is a huge selection of aircraft to fly, but at the expense of detail (not in the sense of graphics but rather function - cockpits for each plane are beautiful but unclickable, meaning if you like to twiddle around, you won't get much of a chance to)

2) IL-2 has aged well. Don't worry about the 'length of time since it was released' - it's not a factor; the engine has been updated nicely and the game looks excellent.

3) Don't buy Forgotten Battles or Pacific Fighters. Buy the new collection DVD that includes everything through 1946. There is no sense in buying older versions that you wouldn't be able to take full advantage of online.

4) If you want to get involved online, there is no sim better than IL-2, because IL-2 is probably 10x more active than the next most active flight sim as such. There is a great community, running everything from serious online campaigns to just shoot-them-all dogfight servers. The game is very stable, runs well on moderate systems and moderate connections, and there are always plenty of servers to choose from (use HyperLobby - that's where a lot of these servers are)

Cool! Thanks for the input. I'm certainly in search of realism...it kinda removes the point of a warsim to seek otherwise imo. I'll have to check the going price of the IL-2 DVD you mentioned.
