+1 for using TWoS if you want a good playable game...But...
After patching to 1.2.0, you CANNOT begin to play, too many bugs and malfunctions, especially your torpedos not working as intended, so there's no surprise you may miss hard targets...
For playing stock game 1.2 here is the minimal setup:

First, you must run the TDW Generic Patcher v.1.0.168.0. This is a MUST to correct about 20-30 basic game bugs.
Then, you must install at least these mods:
FX_Update_0_0_22_ByTheDarkWraith (read carefully what to install!)
DeckGun Friendly Waves
No_Damn_Bubbles_No_Damn_Halo_Mod

Then you can start to play, but still the campaign is not at its best, get TWoS will add Open Horizons II with a lot of campaign additions and fixes and improve other 100 things, much better sub interiors and easier GUI functionality.
