I tend to focus on 1/18th scale die cast cars, 1/24th scale endurance racing, 1/350th scale subs, and 1/144th scale military jets. I'll work on one of those basic types until I start to feel some burn out and then either switch to another of the types or go back to wrenching on my one of my flight sims (FS2002 and FS2004) and logging some virtual hours.

As far as building models, everything you can work on will give you more experience (and sometimes inspiration) for the other types. Its a cumulative process and it helps if you can stay sharp with your basic skills.

I also like the idea of starting a new type of build with something basic and fairly small. See if you enjoy the build and the finished product then tackle a castle.
