Actually, I think there is some form of bug which has to do with all the merchants being sunk (however, the game still regards the escorts as being the convoy).
I had distanced myself by hundreds of miles and sailed all the way back to the coast of France (from the mid-Atlantic) in order to end the patrol and get beyond this problem.
It was an interesting time as it was my first wolfpack attack. I learned not to be the first boat to attack. The escorts seem to stick to whichever boat strikes first as opposed to whoever struck most recently.
