"I'll answer with a question(why do poor people continue to vote Republican?) of my own. What have Democrats done for us? I currently live in Eastern Ohio, the heart of what was once coal and steel country. A Democrat President (Slick Willy) put his name on one of the most destructive pieces of paper in the history of this valley, that paper was the death knell to the vast majority of the good, high paying jobs at places like Weirton Steel, Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, and others. Ever see the movie “The Deer Hunter” with Robert DeNiro and Christopher Walken? If you have, you may remember the steel mill scene. That was filmed in Mingo Junction, OH. You know what is left of that bustling steel mill now? Nothing. 300 acres of overgrown fields crisscrossed with aging, crumbling asphalt roads.
NAFTA was the brainchild of a Democrat, and it crushed this valley. Families that had lived here and worked in the mills for 2 and 3 generations were suddenly out of jobs they had worked their entire lives. They knew literally no other trade. Some adapted and stayed, others took the pension that would be slowly whittled away, others left. Our economy has never recovered.
Then the next Democrat President made it one of his goals to destroy the coal industry, our region's LAST lifeline, all the while ridiculing us with things like his “God and Guns” comment, and others. He then spent his entire second term pandering to fringe groups like the LGBT community, making life better for them, all the while people in the “Rust Belt” suffered, lost their jobs and homes. But that was okay by the Democrats, so long as Mike can use the right bathroom after his “transformation" to “Michelle", and Tom and Dick can get married to each other, with Harry officiating.
Then the 2016 election rolls around, and you had a Democrat candidate that called us “deplorables", not even bothering to campaign in our areas, and promising the status quo that has been so demoralizing and destructive to us will continue, and then you have a complete outsider who promised to change things. Who do you honestly believe we would vote for? Had the DNC not conspired with Hillary to **** Bernie Sanders out of the nomination he so rightly deserved, many of the people that voted for Trump would have voted for Bernie.
