Yes, very good question! I actually wondered about this as well.
Mind you, this is an English translation of the original B.d.U.-KTB in German, and I do not have the German original at hand.
Perhaps, it was translated into English incorrectly. On the other hand, within the context, what other means would the Uboat crews have, to listen for approaching a/c, than the hydrophone. So, I'm guessing, that this was actually possible.
However, I have no record of this ever being done or to what extend this method was successful.
