Thursday, 8 April 1943 - 12th U.-Flotilla Bordeaux (Korvkpt. Klaus Scholtz; ex U 108) -

Daily F.d.U. Briefing

O.K.W.-Report:
a) US President Roosevelt froze wages and prices of utilities in order to prevent inflation. He also banned workers from changing jobs unless the switch would further the war effort.

B.d.U.-Report:
a) U 159 (Kptlt. Helmut Friedrich Witte) which is no longer operational owing to extensive damage sustained from a/c Wabos during attack of Wolfpack Seeräuber on convoy RS 3 off the coast of Spanish/Western Sahara, will be ordered to DG 69 and will rendezvous there with U 455 (Oblt. Hans-Martin Scheibe). It is intended to pick up the crew of U 167 (KrvKpt. Kurt Sturm) from the Canaries with U 455 and to transport them home later, some on each of these two boats.
b) U 203 (Kptlt. Hermann Kottmann; ex Mützelburg) sighted in BE 1689 a large vessel type "Queen Elizabeth" course S.W.; contact lost in view of high speed.

B-Dienst Report:
a) The first modified Lancaster ED765/G ("G" for "Guard" denoting the special security arrangements required) bomber was delivered to the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, Hampshire, England, for planned attacks against German dams.

Friday, 9 April 1943 - 12th U.-Flotilla Bordeaux (Korvkpt. Klaus Scholtz; ex U 108) -

Daily F.d.U. Briefing

O.K.W.-Report:
a) British troops captured Mahares, Tunisia.

O.K.M.-Report:
a) On the personal orders of the Naval High Command, U 128 - 376 - 91 - 262 are sent at maximum speed to meet the homeward-bound vessel, in order to take over in close escort complete flak defence and defence against surface ships. "Irene" was to proceed with course 86° to BE 9527 and there be met at 1800 by 4 destroyers which had previously escorted the "Himalaya" out. In view of several reports by our own aircraft of enemy forces sighted (cruisers, destroyers), Group West decided to escort the "Himalaya" back with destroyers and order "Irene" to proceed to Vigo.
U-boats will now operate on a new course and the rendezvous according to dead reckoning. They will wait there for about 2 hours and then proceed to Vigo with searching courses. Rendezvous with the ship will take place at the earliest in the course of the morning, approximately in BE 8640.

B.d.U.-Report:
a) U 516 (KrvKpt. Gerhard Wiebe) confirmed heavy corrosions on pressure hull at the level of battery compartment 2. She is able to dive only slight depths, and is returning at increased speed.
b) U 339 (Kptlt. Georg-Wilhelm Basse) arrived at Kiel being seriously damaged on 26 March by six depth charges from a British Catalina from the Faeroe Islands (190 Sqn RAF, pilot J. Fish), and was forced to return to Drontheim, Norway, where it was classed unfit for service and reclassified as a training boat.
c) U 635 (Oblt. Heinz Eckelmann) and U 632 (KrvKpt. Hans Karpf) operated against Convoy No. 24 (HX.231) and reported this at 0910 on the 5th April in AK 1852 and at 1710 on the 6th April in AL 3851. Both boats still had contact with the convoy. Since there were no more reports after this, they were ordered several times to give their position but without result. They must, therefore, be considered lost. There is no information as to whether this was due to convoy escort units or to aircraft.

B-Dienst Report:
a) American aircraft ordered at 1150 to attack enemy U-boat in minefield off Fedala (U 117; XB; Korvkpt. Hans-Werner Neumann).
