I also read through Herbert's books in the 1970ies, he sure imagine-built a whole world with all the small details, a work comparable with Tolkien's Lord of the rings, but in the future...
Always thought of the "Fremen" as being like the muslims, the story sometimes mirrors the situation in the middle east.
OT: Funny enough my first book from Herbert was
"Fenian Ram S1881" (the submarine from Frank Herbert’s 1956 novel
"The Dragon in the sea") about a special nuclear sub 'tug' sneaking into enemy waters to pump oil and bring it back to the US. Thought it to be a quite tense and immersive psychological thriller back then..
