I'll give you both answers. Actually there is nothing wrong with the vanilla versions, but some added value has been created in the mods.

I would pick the Silent Hunter 3 and the OneAlex mod. It looks good and has the advantage of being easier to install without playing with installing a group of mods with JSGME.

OR Silent Hunter 4 with the Fall of the Rising Sun (FOTRS) or FOTRSU mod packages. Also looks very attractive, plays nice on 1920x1080 screens. If you like the American subs over playing the German side, it can be attractive.

I play both of them and enjoy them. But I have never yet completed a full career on either of them. Still trying.
