Ugh, didn't scroll down far enough on the list of command bases to choose from, or was that the date selection section... either way, got it rolling now... in the S-44 (SS-155) & starting out on My 1stpatrol, around Attu Island, Aleutians. Have the cold weather gear mod added in & have to say, it looks swell to see them in that gear, especially knowing the weather there in Alaska territory, is vastly different than that of say... the Philippines.... vastly different climate. A shame there is no way to have the boats, accumulate ice buildup, while being there... on the surface, at any rate... ahh well...

Oh, & it's selecting either the S-18 class or the S-42 class Sboats... not S-44... unless you meant that selecting the S-42 class netted you command of the S-44... if so, then disregard...

Yeah, from what I recall... the general order to "husband" torp's, owed to the stock supply they had of them & well... distance & not knowing if or when resupply would be, led to the flash order to ensure using just the minimum needed (or what was known of, at the time.. of needed (not knowing the gloom & doom of the torp crisis looming, at any rate...) ) the order to run submerged, was given due to that.. pre war, subs were free to roam surfaced, without fear of attack, & well... 12/7 changed all that... in a flash. Not to say they didn't practice stealth tactics... as I'm sure they did... wouldn't be much use supporting the fleet, if they weren't ready to be... stealthy. which was the general thoughts on their use... again, 12/7 changed that battle plan.. & sans the torp issues... was for the better. They took Uboat tactics & amped it up, once the torp issues got 95% (rough guess, estimate wise...) ironed out. Fleetboats did to Japan, what Britain & Churchill feared from the Uboats... strangled their ability to stay supplied & in the fight. Which, was what led to the IJN attacks on the general areas around the Philippines... to garner supplies that they had lost due to the embargo.

I know it is a huge risk to stay on surface doing day in early war, have had a couple player tell me they were sunk or severely damaged in air attacks when running on surface without SD radar. For upcoming patch I have changed visual sensors of crew to be a little better, they are far too blind as when player can see ships at 10 NM but crew cant, etc. Plans are typically spotted about 6 NM in new settings, still not much time to get below.

Yes, overall I am pretty happy with torpedoes, represent the various issues. I have refined them a bit to be a bit more accurate in their unreliability in upcoming patch. In 1941/1942 I was lucky to sink one ship, maybe two per patrol due torpedo issues. I have also incorporated longer sinking times mod into sim, these keep tonnage to historical levels for the time period.
Ok, enough... chit chat... off to see of attack & sinking tonnage....
