Once, i manage to split in half an Empire class freighter (really nice model by iambecomelife) in a convoy. Half of the ship sank almost immediatly, but the other half was afloat HOURS later! I chased the convoys for miles and miles, i sank some others freighters, and i come back right to the original route, were i found it.
So, i guess they're independent, most of the times both halfs sank togheter, but this can be really different
