I always try to put myself where the battles are taking place based on what I can read about them on the internet, (the battle of the coral sea, for example) but can't seem to find them. One time I did manage to catch about five destroyers attacking the new sub tender in the solomons, and witnessed the sub tender and harbor patrol boats fight a gallant but loosing battle. It was cool but the only time I've been able to find surface ships fighting. ( I did my part by putting two tin cans on the bottom by the way  )

Open uo the mission editor and read the campaign layers if you want to be in the perfect spot to witness those things. Aircratf carrier battles are dificult to find since they very very long range battles, but you can find them in the scripted layers of RSRD.
