Default USS Tang SS-306 17 February 1944...sunk a cruiser, TANG damaged.

TMO Update
100 difficulty, camera off, contacts on.

Afternoon of 17 February was at8-40 N 149-29 E 12 NM NNW Ulul Island, Carolines. TANG assigned to patrol area and this position for ships fleeing OPERATION HAILSTONE air strikes on morning on 17/18 February.

Attacked a convoy off Ulul that night in a surface attack and booked it to assigned position.

A 1423 SJ made contact at 24000 yards on two pips. Soon APR-1 detected radar emissions. Closed contacts and submerged. Had a Naka Class CL with a Type A Etorofu Escort moving at 17 knots, apparently fleeing Truk. Closed and fired four MK 14 torpedoes from 1800 yards. In spite of the shot nearly being spoiled by a "PETE" overhead (unseen on last observation, spotted when scope came up to observe hits) First two torpedoes hit the CL in the stern and forward of stern, slowing her and starting a fire. Third torpedo hit the bow and fourth found a home under the forward stack. Escort closing and PETE diving, TANG went deep and underwent a six hour depth charge attack, suffering heavy damage after at last count...154 depth charges. Battery was down to 13 percent when escort lost contact.TANG at depth of 611 feet.

Finally came to periscope depth after midnight on 18 February, only to find neither periscope was operational. Radar sweep showed three pips within ten miles. Surfaced and set course away from area to conduct repairs and recharge batteries.

Upside, multiple large explosions, likely magazines of the CL were heard and breaking up noises. NAKA class light cruiser sunk at 8-45 N 149-22 E 15 at 1508 17 February.

Currently 0819 18 February 1944, conducting repairs and preparing to dive shortly for day to complete repairs.
