Quote:
Inęs de Castro (1323-1355) was the mistress of the Portuguese Crown Prince Peter. When the Crown Prince's wife died, Crown Prince Peter and Inęs began living together as husband and wife. They had even more children together, but King Afonso IV felt that Inęs had too much power and wanted to prevent her from getting more by becoming the Crown Prince's wife. The king therefore had Inęs killed.
When the king died in 1357 and Crown Prince Peter became Peter I, Inęs ’body was, according to legend, exhumed. Peter I then had the body crowned and had several courtiers kiss the corpse's hand as a sign of fidelity.
