April 10th 1940, U-27 returns from her 3rd patrol. Notice the deformed stern caused by a British destroyer which rammed the boat during the patrol. The destroyer wasnt the only threat they encountered out there. RAF harrassed the boat and itīs crew with deadly hit and run attacks. The attacks cost the life of Bootsmann Herbert Kriegel.

It is rumoured that captain of the boat, Kpt.Ltn. Adolf Bummer II declined to attend the welcoming party and that he ordered his crew to do so also. When later asked why, he said "Is it right that we go and party, when he (Kriegel) lies in the coffin waiting to be layed to his final rest?".

This was by far the most succesfull patrol of U-27, she sunk 9 enemy vessels for estimated 30,000grt and shot down a British Swordfish type aircraft.
