Default Against all odds ( a short AAR )

This is scenario “Against all odds” with RA mod 1.50 beta,. A 688i (San Juan) has to penetrate a Russian SAG and sink Kuznetsov in North Pacific.

I am doing manual TMA in this game. Here is a self implied house rule. To simulate the wire break, I will cut the torpedo’s wire if my speed is greater than 15kts

At the beginning of the scenario, I turn the San Juan’s heading to 270
40 min into the game, I got a lot of noisy contact on the screen, one of the contact was quickly ID as Boris Chilikin AOR. However, shortly after that I got a lot of TIW message. To be safe I decided to break off the contact, re-initiate the attack two hours later

At 0600, San Juan heads to 270 towards Kuznetsov for a while. Initially San Juan is running at 1000ft. around 0620 I changed the depth to 400ft, above the layer, reduce the speed to 5kts

Active sonar interpret reported contact S21, I am not sure if it is Kuznestosv turned on it’s active sonar or it is from an escort DDG in the formation, Hull sonar picked up S22 at bearing 280s, TA distinguish the sonar profile of Kuznetsov in a cluster of noisy signals (S23). The other one (S16) picked up earlier is Boris Chilikin AOR.

I input an estimated location of S22 , I merged S22, S21 and S23 together , enter the solution then split these three contacts, By using this method, it allows me to input an estimated position while keep the updated bearing of the Active interpret and TA contact, so that I can keep a good situation awareness. However, regarding Kuznetsov’s actual position, I have doubt on my own estimation, it cannot be that close.

Due to the concern of an active sonar detection I decided to dive below the layer. Changed the depth to 555ft at 0636. I lost the Active sonar contact, lost Kuznetsov and Boris Chilikin’s signals on TA. So I guess my pervious estimation of Kuznetsov and Boris Chilikin's location are not correct. Both contacts should be still very far from me (>10nm).

(Solution is incorrect, no way S22 can be that close)

Well, I guess I cannot hide under layer and be a blindman forever. So I decided to change the depth above the layer. The plan is to stay above the layer for a very short period of time, gather whatever information I can get then dive below the layer. I pop up at 0705
Boris Chilikin is close enough to have a strong signal on Sphere sonar (S24), when I dive below the layer, it disappeared, so it is still not close enough to penetrate below the layer . I put two marks on the map, one records the active ping’s bearing (Kuznetsov or DDG), another one is the bearing of hull sonar’s Boris Chilikin contact . then dive below the layer at 0706

An order of change depth above layer issued on 0723. After received one ping, I ordered to dive back below the layer immediately. I put two more marks on the map.

Sonar room report they picked up Boris Chilikin’s signal when we are still under layer. That’s a good news, which means Boris Chilikin get very close to us, we are going to infiltrate the SAG. However, the big question is still there, where is Kuznetsov?

I ordered to get above the layer, get one more ping, made one more mark on the map, then dive back to layer…. With three golden lines , I can run a TMA. I did an estimation on the active sonar source possible location , input Z4 on the map. I kept the current course and speed to close the distance.

(to be continued)
