U.S.S. CISCO SS-290 Operation Report of First Sea Trial

PROLOGUE

U.S.S CISCO SS-290, is the fifth submarine of the BALAO class constructed and was placed into
commission on MAY 10, 1943, Commander James W. Coe, USN, commanding. CISCO is named for a whitefish of the Great Lakes, the only US Naval Vessel named so thus far.
In the weeks following commissioning, CISCO underwent final fitting out prior to trials, including installation of
a new SJ Surface search radar, twin 20mm guns forward and aft on the bridge, as well as on the aft deck.

0900 Underway from Mare Island, CA for training area to conduct
diving drills and plot/intercept/navigation exercises.

0910 Fell in line astern of escort, ANDERSON DD 411.

0500 At dawn overcast and light fog arrived with 14 knt winds direction 159. Seas had a light chop.
Decided to watch weather but 0700 dive remained scheduled.

0650 Crew called to GENERAL QUARTERS. Rigged for deep submergence.


0700 DIVE NO. 5
Surface Speed: 11 kts
Dive Time: 51 seconds
Depth: 412 ft
Remark: First Dive to Test Depth- 412 ft.
Dive was slow and steady, checking all functions
during descent. Initial dive angle 25 degrees down,
steadied to 15 degrees


0705 Thermal layer detected at 200 ft.
38-14N 123-28W


0716 Leveled off at Test Depth-412 feet.
All was normal.


0816 After one hour at test depth, conducting
maneuvering and systems check, began ascent to periscope depth.
Twenty degree up angle.

0821 Periscope depth.

0825 Surfaced

Depth: Test Depth-412 ft
Remark: 'Fast' dive to test depth from surface, made
at flank seed and 25 degree down angle.

Conducted maneuvers and systems checks.

1130 Emergency Surface! (DRILL) Blew Ballast at 412 ft depth.

1132 Surfaced. Twenty two percent of compressed air expended.


1147 DIVE NO. 8
Trim dive to 90 ft.


1200 Periscope depth. Raised SD mast to check function.
Functioned properly.


1210 Surfaced.


1212 Secured GQ. Commenced battery recharge, compressed air replemishment
and noon meal. Deep submergence dives scheduled for afternoon.


1300 Overcast and fog cleared. Winds 11 knots direction 156.
Light chop to seas.

1420 Called GENERAL QUARTERS. Rigged for deep submergence.


1430 DIVE NO. 9
Surface Speed: 15 kts
Dive Time: seconds
Depth: 512 ft.
Remark: Deep Dive to 512 ft, 100 ft beyond test depth.

1435 Passed Test Depth 412 ft.


1437 Passed 500 ft.


1438 Leveled off at 512 ft. No leaks
or other issues. Began manevuring and testing of equipment.

1520 JP (sound) contact bearing 341 closing medium speed, estimated range
10000 yds. Ordered periscope depth for impromptu fire control drill.


TORPEDO FIRE CONTROL DRILL NO.1


1530 Periscope depth. Spotted smoke and outline of mid sized AK bearing 010 at six miles.
on course 340. Ordered CISCO to intercept course 070 at flank speed and to depth
80 ft. All compartments reported manned and ready for torpedo firing.

1550 Periscope depth. Target on course 070 closing.


1602 Employed WCA Sonar for one ping. Target range 1450 yds.


1605: Fired simulated torpedoes from range of 1000 yds.

Remark: Fast Deep Dive to 520 ft. 108 ft beyond test depth.

1730 Confident in CISCO's construction, ordered slow test descent to 550 ft.


1800 CISCO at depth of 600 ft.

1805 Speed of 4.5 knts was required to maintain depth control at 600 ft.


1848 After nearly a hour of maneuvering at 600 ft, began ascent to periscope depth.


1854 Periscope depth.


1900 Surfaced.


1905 Secured GQ.


1918: Simulated SD contact range 12000 yds closing fast! (Dive Drill)

1918: DIVE NO.11
14 Surface Speed: 20.5 kts
Dive Time: 40 seconds
Depth: 512 ft.
Remark: 'Crash Dive' to 150 ft prompted by simulated aircraft closing on SD Radar
at dusk.

1945 Surfaced. Night orders to patrol area under simulated war patrol conditions.Any contacts were to be closed, tracked, and identified. Simulated fire control attack drills possible. Remainder of test dives scheduled for dawn following morning.
