not sure if players are supposed to be able to compensate.
the settings which you do not see read something like this:
dud chances = %
premature chances = %
depth keeping chances = %, plus some depth ranges.
but the depth ranges may not matter given the percentage and whatever secret value the depth is off before it it applies the range factor.

so, it is difficult to say what to do. if you set your depth to lowest setting it may broach, explode, run deep anyway, or be seen and the target will react.
