With less recoil distance than a main wheeled-carriage seven-man cannon, the sled-mounted carronade only required a four-man crew. Generally outclassed by the greater weight-of-metal and longer range of an American frigate's broadside, the English frigates were inclined to avoid a one-on-one encounter...as the USS Constitution amply demonstrated...3 times! and approx. 15% of the original still remains afloat, commissioned, and occasionally firing thru a gunport!
