Actually, that is part of that article linked to above, and is modeled into most "dud" mods, and is in the stock game also. When BuOrd was "testing" the torpedoes, they used "waterheads" so that the torpedo would float to the surface after they ran their course, to make for easier recovery. The actual warheads were quite a bit heavier than the water head, which is why the torpedoes ran 10-12 foot deeper (on average) than set. Some ran deeper, while others wouldn't do that, and would just drop to the bottom of the ocean... Some skippers would go against orders and would set the torpedo shallower, and used the impact pistol - which actually had an issue also...
