Sunday, 21 March 1943 - Iceland Passage -

0401 - Qu.8353AE center - During watch change diving from FuMB Detection (no Magic Eye) in 60°true, E=9000. At A-Meter no Wabos.

0404 - Sound contact warship bearing 158°, E=8600, in Qu.8329AE bottom right, on course 285°, speed approx.13kn.

0445 - Sound contact 0404/21 now bearing 79°, E=14000, in Qu.8329AE center left, on course 315°.

0508 - Lost sound contact 0404/21 in 77°, E=22600, in Qu.8325AE bottom right, on course 315°.

Cmdr.: I suspect that this is one of the patrol vessels patrolling the Iceland Passage from Faeroe Islands to Iceland, as reported in the Op.-Briefing. Tube VI cannot be repaired with on-board tools. We will have to continue our war patrol with one less torpedo tube.

0516 - Surfaced from S-Tiefe after 1h 15' and 3.8nm.
Weather and Sea unchanged. Full Moon in WSW.

0521 - Boat ventilated. 2xH.F.

0618 - Qu.8355AE - Morning Dawn.

0750 - Sunrise. Full Moon setting in West. Weather and Sea unchanged in 5 days.

1102 - F.T.'s from B.d.U.:
B-Dienst Report: According to a new Radio Intelligence (X) report, SC 123 was in BC 4564 at 1100/21/3.
The Russian BI-3 rocket-powered prototype aircraft took its third flight at Sverdlovsk (modern day Yekaterinburg), Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia.
To all boats: U 332 urgently requested aircraft assistance in BF 81. She was attacked there, presumably by English aircraft. 4 Ju 88's were sent out, 2 of which were shot down by Beaufighters.
As the blockade-runner "Doggerbank" is taking avoiding action, attack is forbidden with immediate effect, on independent ships in CF 30, 60, 90 and in large square CG.
During the first three weeks of March, Uboats have sunk 97 ships for 500,00ts, much more than the enemy can build during this time frame.
