As for sleeping right behind the engines, I can't say; but I was a radioman on a destroyer off the coast of Vietnam, and our quarters were right next to the barbette of the aft twin-5" turret. There was more than one night when I drifted off to sleep to the sound of others shouting and those guns going off right above our quarters every fifteen seconds or so. It's not only possible to get used to the sounds, it's easy.
