No mines were encountered.

THERMAL LAYERS
________________

Thermal layers were detected at 144, 150, and 190 ft.

ANTI-SUBMARINE COUNTERMEASURES AND EVASION
___________________________________________

Enemy ASW efforts were typical. Although a more powerful
depth charge did appear to be used in both depth charge attacks.

Evasion was normal with frequent changes in depth, course, and speed.

During evasion CISCO reached 650 ft.

SOUND GEAR AND SOUND CONDITIONS
________________________________

Sound gear function was normal with long range detection
in excess of 15,000 yards and precise tracking possible in most
conditions at 10,000 yards.

Sound conditions in are were generally favorable.

MAJOR DAMAGE AND DEFECTS
__________________________

No major defects or damage occurred on this patrol.

RADAR
______

SJ

Ths new SJ-1 Surface Search Radar performed very well with a average detection range of
20,000 yards. The PPI scope provides major tactical advantage, especially during
night surface attacks.

SD

SD Radar function was normal with typical detection range at 20000 yards.

RADIO
______

Radio function was satisfactory.

TORPEDO PERFORMANCE
____________________

Performance of the MK 14-2A torpedo was excellent throughout the patrol.
No malfunctions occurred. Magnetic features were disabled on 20 January per orders received
from CTF-72.

MK 18 electric torpedo performance was overall excellent. One torpedo suffered
a possible gyro failure and veered off proper course. MK 18 accounted for
one auxiliary cruiser sunk and two AK damaged.

PERSONNEL
__________

Crew performance was excellent during this patrol.

Two Officers Qualified in Submarines during this patrol. The entire
wardroom are now sporting Gold Dolphins.

Twelve men qualified in submarines during this patrol.

Six men advanced in rating.

REMARKS
_________

A productive and busy patrol with six ships sunk for35,567 tons, in a area that since Fall of 1942 has been a "target rich" environment and remains so. With the sinking of two fuel laden southbound tankers, no doubt en route
to Rabaul to provide much needed aviation gasoline for aircraft based there, as our aerial offensive against the area continues. Depriving aircraft there of two tankers worth of fuel, sure made a "dent"in their operations.

Expectations of the new MK 18 electric torpedo were overall me, given a MK 18 was responsible. or the sinking of a 14280 ton Auxiliary Cruiser on this patrol. Obviously, the lack of a visible wake provides a advantage. However, the relatively slow speed and smaller warhead hampered overall effectiveness against other targets, as one large AK took two and sailed on,
while another hit with two MK 18, required follow up shots with MK 14 to ensure her sinking.

Ineffectiveness of enemy ASW on this patrol was quite surprising. While have seemed to deploy a heavier and more effective depth charge, the lack of vigor in their counterattacks was surprising, but appreciated.
