The AI is very far from realistic in SH3. You can select the level of an unit (from poor to elite). The "poor" level is often selected for the ASW ships at the beginning of the war. In this case, the AI is very dumb (as you described).
LSH campaign is easier than GWX campaign. In GWX, it will be nearly impossible for you to survive until the end of WWII... Because in 1944-45, nearly all ASW ships are elite... and they won't let you go as soon as they have found you. The elite level is also unrealistic : a destroyer will detect you instantly, and then will throw its DC so they fall exactly right above you, whatever speed and depth you are currently at...
