Basically DartkWraith's UI mod saves the game. Combined with some other graphical ones and some AI tweaks and sinking tweaks the game is fully playable, even without patches.
All the moaning and complaining is coming from people that don't even own the game you'll notice, or that have specific single issues they are blowing out of proportion.
Get the game, get some mods and enjoy!
