I had the opposite experience
After getting used to night surface attacks in AOD, I tried it in SH3 only to be detected and fired upon from far longer range than escorts should realistically be able to see me...
Uderwater though, it was exactly that - after AOD escorts, SH3 ones felt like minor nuisance.
