I gave up on masking tape. It is
TOTALLY WORTHLESS when painting a room now a days- Latex or Oil based paint. It is so thin and worthless. I use the 3M blue colored painters tape. In the last week I repainted my outdoor Gas light. On top is a Gold Eagle. Wrapped it up in 3M painters tape, painted the gas light pole black spray paint, NO BLEED THROUGH. I realize you are talking about a model, but it goes beyond that.
In fact I have REVERSED the process of how I paint a room. Paint the walls first now. Then I wait 24 hours. Then I use the 3m Blue painters tape on the walls and create "straight line" where the ceiling and walls meet. I then protect the walls from the drips - and then coat the ceiling with 2 coats of "Ceiling White". Then I wait 12 hours. Then I pull off the blue 3M painters tape off VERY slowly. Comes out PERFECT every time.

Look at THESE folders used it in two rooms in the last 6 months:
2008-01 Laundry Project
2008-02 Family Room Project
If you are into furniture restoration, it is a LIFE SAVER not to have "bleed though" mistakes when stipping or putting on the new stain/finish ----
