They were lucky, pneumonia is almost always lethal for European red squirrels. Thats why there is so intense warning against "feeding on lungs", means: you feed the young squirrel with a syringe and put up too much pressure, and so some of the milk ends up in the lungs, causing pneumonia, almost always causing death.
If you ever happen to do it: slow, soft, gentle with the syringe. NO pressure.
