Suppose you are a Trump and you want to keep taxes low for the very rich. In a democracy, this is rather difficult, because the very rich are by definition a minuscule minority of the population. So how do you still get large parts of the electorate behind you, even if it is not in their economic interest to vote for you? The trick is to pit people against each other along nationalistic, cultural and racial lines. With this plutocratic variant of identity politics, the rich have managed to forge a coalition with middle- and working-class Americans, who have had it up to no end with centre-left politicians.
