From O.K.W.:
a) On 1 July, The Führer addressed the generals slated to command Operation Citadel.
b) Also, on 1 July, the Luftwaffe formed the Fernaufklärungsgruppe 5 special long range reconnaissance unit.
c) The Italian 1st Air Force Assault Regiment "Amedeo d'Aosta" was effectively disbanded; as of this date, it consists only of a small number of officers.
d) The US 15th Air Force attacked 3 airfields in southern Italy.
e) US-Troops have landed on New Georgia, Solomon Islands, with troops of US Army 43rd Division moving from Rendova to New Georgia, covered by gunfire from US Marines 9th Defense Battalion and US Army 192nd Field Artillery aimed at Munda Airfield. Major General Noboru Sasaki assumed sole command of all Japanese garrisons on New Georgia. Japanese bombers attempted to interfere by attacking supply dumps on Rendova, causing heavy casualties.
f) Japanese physicist Yoshio Nishina met his with army liaison officer Major General Nobuji and reported that he expected to be successful with the nuclear research project. He noted that 10 kilograms of uranium-235 of at least 50% purity to create an atomic bomb, but he needed a large cyclotron to conduct experiments to confirm this theory. Nobuji promised further funding.

a) Kriegsmarinewerft Kiel facilities in Kiel, was sold on 1 July, forming a new company named Howaldtswerke Aktiengesellschaft Werft Kiel.
From B.d.U.:
a) "Milkcow" U 488 (Oblt.d.R. Erwin Bartke) has refueled U 634 (Oblt. Eberhard Dahlhaus) and U 257 (Kptlt. Heinz Rahe) on 1 July. Boat is sold out and returning.
b) "Milkcow" U 462 (Oblt. Bruno Vowe): Bomb hit in the forecastle. No. 9 diving tank damaged, No. 3, 7 and 8 blown. Return passage off the Spanish coast. U 462 is escorted by U 160 (Oblt. Gerd von Pommer-Esche).
c) From 6th July U 382 (Oblt. Leopold Koch) will refuel to capacity from "Milkcow" U 487 (Oblt.d.R. Helmut Metz) in CF 6882.
d) U 154 (
Oblt. Oskar-Heinz Kusch) reports: 0244 unsuccessful bombing attack on U 126 (Oblt. Siegfried Kietz; ex Bauer), contact lost. Independent passage from BF 4775.
e) U 592 (Kptlt. Carl Borm) and U 341 (Oblt. Dietrich Epp) have been ordered to proceed in company through Biscay. U 592 will suggest a rendezvous.
f) Our own aircraft sighted at 1100 one heavy and one light cruiser in BF 4847, course 320° (To be taken with a pinch of salt. Probably only destroyers).
B-Dienst Report:
a) Enemy reported sighting of U 180's group (IXD1; Fregkpt. Werner Musenberg), escorted by 2 destroyers on 1 July, were also sighted in BF 7620.
b) Aircraft Carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10; Essex-class) completed repairs on 1 July, and began air operations out of Norfolk, Virginia, United States.
c) Greek guerrillas were placed under direct operational control of Allied Middle Eastern Command.
