In daylight,
we attack again and right away, the escorts close in,
trying to protect the herd...
The angle on this ship is far from perfect,
but having only one torpedo left,
I want to try...
Out of torpedoes and low on fuel,
we receive orders to return to base.
It is a long way home from the CG quadrant,
so I use the time to fill out the KTB and prepare radio messages.
While reading over the radio message that is to be sent,
I feel pride and satisfaction.
New boat.
New glory!
On our way home,
we sunk another two ships with the deck gun
for a total of 12 ships in one patrol.
8 Mar 1941
Morning
The crowd cheers loudly while we approach the U-Bunker,
all these pennants flying over the boat indeed look impressive.
All that's missing now, is a red one.
Ashore again,
I learn that we even make it into the newspaper.
For sinking over 100000 tons of enemy shipping,
I was awarded the Knights Cross!
Later, in Cohausz' office,
he demands to hear every single detail about my successful hunt...
After the debriefing however,
he informs me that I am being transferred.
I have mixed feelings about the transfer.
The 1. U-Flottille was my 'home flotilla' after all
and I did not hear too many nice things about Wilhelmshaven.
Orders are orders, though.
Before I leave, I go have a last look on that chalk board.
Watch out,
'old guard', I am catching up!
