While falling towards the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean,
I wonder what happens first.
Will the pressure hull fail or will we hit rock bottom and break apart?
Before I can finish to imagine the boat breaking up
and a huge burst of water ending my life...

...we hit the sandy bottom in 200m depth!

Rumbling, noise, lights go out and on again.
Silence.

We are alive.
The flooding can be contained, and in the early morning hours,
the repairs are completed.

Well then!
We pump the water out, preparing to blow ballast.
The valves open, the air bursts loudly into the tanks, pressing the water out.
And the boat rises.

However,
this patrol is over.
After sustaining heavy damage like this, the next dive can be the last.
Home bound, we spot a tanker and make use of the last two torpedoes.

Hit amidships.
The tanker continues on course.
The last torpedo doesn't even leave the tube.
God damn these duds!

After reporting the damage and torpedo issues,
we are ordered to return to base for repairs and refit.

8 Nov 1940
Afternoon

While we glide through the mirror like harbor water,
I reflect on the close call of fate.
If the bottom where we sank would have been rock, or just some meters deeper...
I discontinue the thought.

Leaving U-115,
a Korvettenkapitän approaches me, reaches out for my hand and shakes it firmly.
Apparently, the 1. U-Flottille has a new commander, Krvkpt. Cohausz.
Cohausz was in command of UA and took over the 1. U-Flottille,
while Eckermann took over UA.
They simply switched.

While I make my report about the critical situation on the last patrol, I see a smile appearing on his face.
What the... I just tell the man about the near loss of U-115...
...when he interrupts me to congratulate me about my new command.

U-64, a newly constructed type IXB boat.
I struggle to find the right words, or words at all, so I just gratefully shake his hand.
"My crew?" I ask.
"Will be transferred with you and complemented to full strength!"
"Perfect!" I think to myself...

Rather baffled by the recent events,
I even forget to check the leader board.
I just want some sleep.
