Beyond annoyed

Still getting CTD when breaking contact with enemy convoys or task forces.

I had managed by saving often and reloading, with no issues. Now in June 44, after engaging a carrier task force( one with CVE's, Yamato, Kongos etc) , just after sinking a Taiyo CVE. When I reload, all my gauges, sonar etc are stuck, at the 12 o clock position. These are old bugs I thought were gone from SH 4. Keep happening to me for some reason on new PC. Plenty of ram, etc. Quite aggravating.

My gauges get stuck after crossing the Panama canal if I save halfway to New London. If I get to New London and save everything is normal. No Mega mods, just my modding here and there.

Maybe a clue, maybe nothing.

Happy Hunting!

Are you using a "memory manager", or Large Address Aware applet? I can't remember... CapnScurvy has that Windows10; Large Address Aware; SH4 Install write-up on it. Historically speaking, Torpedobait asked about one Large Address Aware back in 2012 (follow the links). The newer version of LAA is seemingly the most stable, and definitely has the best interface. Some of those convoy and task force groups are entirely too large for the game, and they even have difficulty "navigating", as you've already seen, and that can kill cpu cycles. Throw in an airplane, and it may fall on its face.

If you are using that, have you tweaked any of the AI settings for when they break-off contact? If I'm remembering correctly, you changed their time over you without contact... ?? Could that be influencing the breaking of contact?

I have the 4 gig patch installed. LAA seemed to have no bearing on the CTD. Then again not sure if was installed properly. The readme was a little vague if I recall.

I did change the lost contact time in the sim.cfg. Why would that cause a CTD?

I never had these issues on my old pc. Would screen resolution matter?

s7rikeback and I were talking about screen resolution just yesterday, but only from a screen capture POV, in that you get above a certain screen size, and the game can't do it, probably due to file size would be my guess. I doubt if it'd be complicit in a CTD. What resolution are you running? What video card are you using?

Read CapnScurvy's LAA write-up though, and check if it "took" on your SH4 file. If you used one, it most likely did take, unless the SH4.exe file was write-protected. If you've got a newer computer and Win7 or above, the version the Captain uses is the newest. The older LAA apps don't have a good way to confirm functionality, and you have to re-open the program and look at the target file. If it didn't take, that would explain the CTDs that you get at a seemingly high rate. Beyond that, it's a bit strange getting CTDs that often, in my opinion.

I'm thankful that I'm not having CTD issues, just gauge freeze to 12:00 and only after crossing through the Panama Canal West to East. East to West there is no 12:00 gauge freeze.

This is the first time I've heard of anyone else experiencing this gauge freeze which is why I commented. Now I sail to New London with frozen gauges and Save... lol. When I load that save the gauges are back to normal.

When I did my Gato on a World tour years ago (inspired by someone else who did it) it was before the CZ mod had been made and the gauges worked just fine. I went W to E on that tour, unlimited fuel of course, and I sailed around Cape Horn - Drake Passage into the Atlantic.

I'd like to figure out the gauge freeze but it isn't at the top of my list.

My LAA is configured correctly.

Happy Hunting!

I installed LAA again, and did not get CTD on same task force, date and time on next try.Was able to make contact, engage, sink a Yamato, and get away. Ran into plenty of planes in Philippine Sea during battle. No CTD. I alos changed my screen resolution to 1920x180 iin the game to matchwhat monitor is set to. Maybe luck, or issue could be fixed, we shall see on next patrol.
