Very interesting especially chapter 1-5. Fire control party and methods for target tracking are discussed.

Very useful for SH1 through 5 skippers...

Thanks for the listing of something that will be really useful to anyone who does manual targeting in the Silent hunter series and probably many other simulations.

I haven't seen the book but if you have, does it include anything on mast height to determine range and anything to determine speed as well ?

This question is for everyone including you, Pilot. Modern submariners are able to determine speed by listening to the propellers but is there a formula for accurately determining that speed by this method ?

Well the mast height method is discussed and very detailed in my opinion. Now for the second question I was eager to read something about the method of counting propellers and to determine the speed of a ship. Unfortunately the author just mentions it and does not give any detail that we can use here. I do believe that this is still a classified information taught at Sub school and "loose lips sink our ships" is the policy over there. From Chapter 6 to the end is all about sub construction and some history on cold war events. I did enjoy the book in a whole and I think it did give me some new perspective on how sub warfare got evolved. Now, it is not a book that actually teaches us in plain English on how to sink a ship with a Mark 14 or a Mark 48 Torpedo but the history of the problems the submariners had to deal with and improvise on the fly to sink ships is a good reason to read it. I do dream of a virtual submariner here on subsim that will someday "release the kraken" and teach us what is taught in sub schools to deal with TMA and sink our enemies. As long as this person does not get arrested. ;)

Thanks for the Information, Pilot. I was trying to interject as much realism as I could into my Sims be doing a speed calculation on propeller noises. I will look into the book though to see if it can add anything and by what you said, I'm sure it will.
