Error When Installing/Uninstalling

Hi everyone! I just registered here but I have an annoying problem that prevents me from playing SHIV. So I tried to install the 1.4 patch but there was an error when I installed it. It was something to the effect of it not being compatible or something like that. Well anyway, I tried to uninstall it, but then it wouldn't let me do that. So I tried to just delete the Silent hunter folder but now it seems to think it's still installed and I get this error trying to uninstall it:

Error Code: -5006 : 0x8000ffff
Error Information:
>SetupNew\SetupDLL.cpp (814)
PAPP:Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific
PVENDOR:Ubisoft (http://www.Ubisoft.com)
PGUID:0D005F09-A5F4-473B-A901-5735C6AF5628
$12.0.0.49985
@Windows (9200) BT_OTHER 840.99

And this when I try to install it:

Error Code: -5006 : 0x8000ffff
Error Information:
>SetupNew\SetupDLL.cpp (814)
PAPP:Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific
PVENDOR:Ubisoft (http://www.Ubisoft.com)
PGUID:0D005F09-A5F4-473B-A901-5735C6AF5628
$12.0.0.58849
@Windows (9200) BT_OTHER 840.89

I'm not very computer savvy so I realize I probably did something horribly wrong and stupid but if anyone knows how to fix this I'd be thankful because I literally cannot find ANYTHING about it on Google. Thanks :)

If you bought the Gold edition of the game you don't need the 1.4 patch. As to the other stuff I can't help you unfortunately. Also welcome to the forums.

ok thanks:)

I really don't care about the patch though I just want it to work again haha

Sorry I can't help beyond the patch.

Question: After deleting the sh4 folder, and refreshing the view, is the folder really gone?

In case it didn't, I'd restart the computer in Safe Mode. You can accomplish many things in Safe Mode, especially when dealing with stubborn problems.
And don't forget the SHIV folder in your user profile, where all the save games go.

After that, I'd restart the computer in Normal Mode, and run a good system cleaner to clean out redundant files, registry errors, etc. There are a few available on the internet.
Some are better than others, and some have caused mischief in my OS. For this reason I have been using Advanced System Cleaner for some years now. It's proved to be reliable. The free version is quite good. It even comes with an "Uninstaller" that can perform a deep search and clean out for left overs of what you've just uninstalled. Just beware of the Registry Cleaner (this is valid for ANY OS cleaning software): if the registry cleaner scanning offers you in the order of well over a thousand registry entries to delete, DON'T. Scan it again. If in doubt, reboot the computer. Otherwise you might find yourself installing the OS again (although I'm sure this would fix the SHIV install problem :D ).

Other thing that came to mind is the possibility of a corrupted install file.
But lets do one thing at a time.

your uninstall files and your game have now been corrupted and you will need to manually go to the program files and delete them yourself, then delete any other remaining files and run a good registry cleaner. '

after that you should be able to reinstall the game and start over.

you always have to not just uninstall mods before you do any changes such as installing patches but you also need to check and remove any files left behind by things like conflicts or corruptions

for any updates or patches to be installed the game needs to be in original unmodded condition

Ok, I will try these solutions, thanks

ok I fixed the problem but I still can't install the patch. It says :

"CRC error: The file C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\sh4.exe doesn't match the file in the setup's .cab file. The medium from which you are running the setup may be corrupted"

Which version of the game is your original install?
If I'm not mistaken you cannot patch version 1.0 directly to version 1.4
Another question: have you tried to run the game before atempting to patch it up to 1.4?

frigate 11-03-13 04:54 PM

Oh I see, I have version 1. Do I have to do one at a time?

I don't think you need them all but you do need to do patch 1.3 to update v1.0 then do 1.4 but if you have v1.5 patch you can go straight from v1.0 to v1.5 without needing to install the #3 & 4 patches

all mods are now made for v1,5 so you need to get that patch and forget about v1.4

frigate 11-03-13 07:03 PM

Ok I'll do that thanks

By the way a CRC error can be indicative of a corrupt file but yes incompatible as well. It stands for Cylindrical Redundancy Check. If your trying to run this from the internet, as in clicking on a file and saying run, instead click and "SAVE" it to your hard drive then run it. Programs ran over the internet can get a CRC error if a packet becomes corrupt in the data transmission. Basically it is checking the file from the front end to the back end and seeing if the file was correctly sent. If there is data corruption there will be an error. This also applies to files trying to be ran with programs where the file is from a different version of the software.

Error Code: -5006 : 0x8000ffff simply means the computer ran into an unrecoverable program error and terminated.
