Silent Hunter I sound settings

Hi: My Silent Hunter I work quite good via D-Fend Reloaded. Only problem , I have sound only at the intro screens, or with the submarine sinking screen. To have the sound I have try to installed the VDM 2.0.4 following the procedure by Don V.Wells http://www.subsowespac.org/sh_xp/silent_hunterxp.shtml

All ok to this point, then the come this famous "Fix" and the problems:

Create and install a registry fix for VDMSound v2.0.4 update1
"Use NOTEPAD to create the file "HKCU_Software_Freeware_VDMSound_Fix.reg" in the sub-directory "C:\UTILS". This file may be created by a cut-and-paste of the six text lines delimited below:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Freeware\VDMSound]
"NextTip"=dword:00000000
"TipsFile"="C:\\Program Files\\VDMSound\\VDMSound.tips"
"ShowTips"=dword:00000000

Save the file "HKCU_Software_Freeware_VDMSound_Fix.reg".
Merge the Registry fix by 'double-clicking' the "HKCU_Software_Freeware_VDMSound_Fix" in the Windows XP Explorer.

Here I am loss and dont unterstand what that mean the author.
I have undestand , to create a new text pad document called " HKCU_Software_Freeware_VDMSound_Fix.reg" and inside must be:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Freeware\VDMSound]
"NextTip"=dword:00000000
"TipsFile"="C:\\Program Files\\VDMSound\\VDMSound.tips"
"ShowTips"=dword:00000000

OK, fine but, what that mean "Merge the Registry fix by 'double-clicking' the "HKCU_Software_Freeware_VDMSound_Fix" in the Windows XP Explorer"? Merge with what or where?, double click , that open the doc but nothing more. Must go to Windows XP(SP3)folder and insert or added this text somewhere inside of other document?

Thanks for the help

Yes, create the HKCU_Software_Freeware_VDMSound_Fix.reg file and double click it to merge it into the registry.

A BIG Thanks to subsowespac for leaving this page up!

Happy Hunting!

Art

Edit - be sure the file extension is not txt. Save it as "reg" .... HKCU_Software_Freeware_VDMSound_Fix.reg

I'm confused - aren't you the one installing on XP?

Use the Don Wells procedure on the link you posted, not DOSBox right?

Danelov 01-14-12 05:12 PM

Yes, is a XP and actually only way of play is via D-Fend Reloaded(without sound). I dont know what that mean Don Wells with this HKCU_Software_Freeware_VDMSound_Fix.reg and what must to do with that, how is this "merge" and where.

Regards

aanker 01-14-12 06:38 PM

Just double click it and it should automatically merge into the registry if it has the reg file extension.

HKCU_Software_Freeware_VDMSound_Fix.reg <---- reg (dot .reg NOT dot .txt)

In Windows Explorer have your Folder set on "Detail View" and it is easier to see the file extensions. Sometimes you need to click, Show File Extensions in Options for Folder View. It depends how you have your computer set up. I prefer to see the file extensions in Windows Explorer Folder View.

Thanks Aanker for the patience. Unlucky the thing dont work and I have always the error message with this problematic fix and the reg. I have the update 2 of VDM, maybe this procedure for this bug fix work only with the VDM update 1 and not with the 2 or dont work with XP service pack 3.

Thanks again

This quoted text below is what you pasted into NOTEPAD and saved as:
HKCU_Software_Freeware_VDMSound_Fix.reg

Quote:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Freeware\VDMSound]
"NextTip"=dword:00000000
"TipsFile"="C:\\Program Files\\VDMSound\\VDMSound.tips"
"ShowTips"=dword:00000000
like he says in:
Use NOTEPAD to create the file "HKCU_Software_Freeware_VDMSound_Fix.reg" in the sub-directory "C:\UTILS"

I'm thinking maybe it is being saved as a txt file. Can you see the file extension?

It should be a reg file and maybe have green blocks for the icon.

After this reg fix the next thing is to be sure to use the Musical note to create the VDMS tabbed interface. First we have to get this reg file created so it doesn't open in Notepad when it's double clicked.

Anyway if the contents of the file are the above quoted lines, maybe try renaming the file to this:

HKCU_Software_Freeware_VDMSound_Fix.reg

by highlighting the name so it turns blue and pasting that name and extension in. It might say, "changing the file extension is dangerous and it may not run" or somthing similar, but it has to be a reg file, not a txt file.

It will run with SP3 and Version 2 is correct.

Double check the contents and name and try again because I'm sure you would rather be playing Silent Hunter... lol

Hi: I'm running Silent Hunter CE via D-Fend Reloaded. I was able to have sound while playing thru out the game by doing the following setup on D-Fend Reloaded. BTW...my setup is on a Acer Aspire One D55 Intel Atom Processor N450 1.66, Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit system.

1.) Make a image of your Silent Hunter CD with ImgBurn (free) or UltraISO (not free) and place it in any folder of your choice.

2.) Start D-Fend Reloaded.

3.) Click on the ADD button.

4.) Select Install from source media.

5.) Change "Install from archive files" to "Install from CD image".

6.) Navigate to the folder where you created the Silent Hunter CD image & select it.

7.) D-Fend Reloaded will install Silent Hunter with the sound working.

PS...I hope this help anyone having problems with the sound in Silent Hunter.

not to necro old threads

trying to run sh1 on windows 7, using the latest version of dosbox.

It seems to be working beautifully, other than the fact there is NO sound, what so ever.

edit= thanks.

look it, i'll be honest & just say I grabbed an abandonware version of SH1 (no disk) trying to run it on windows 7, using the latest version of dosbox.

It seems to be working beautifully, other than the fact there is NO sound, what so ever.

how do I get it to work please & thank you?

Might want to edit this.

Talk of abandonware is against the rules here at Subsim.

Abandonware usually has a good chance of being corrupt. I can help you with DOSBox stuff...but abandonware is not to be talked about here.

I got my SH to work by buying an old copy of SHCE off of Ebay. Same with Fast Attack, Navy Strike and other old DOS games.

SH1 is a great game. :rock: DOSBox runs it flawlessly on my system.

I've not played Fast Attack or Navy Strike. :hmmm:
