HMS Victory 1/180th scale Airfix kit

Got this little beauty for my birthday a few days ago and have started construction. I've created a Picasa album with images rather than posting them all here and on other forums I frequent. https://picasaweb.google.com/tarjaks...eat=directlink

First stage of construction is complete:

Hmm...I don't recall seeing sails draped over the ship in that fashion. :O:

LOL, I'm sure they didn't use clothes pegs to hold sections of the keel together either.

First coat of paint on the exterior of the hull is done.

Is there also a bit you can paint on the deck where Nelson fell?

Sailor Steve 01-23-12 12:36 PM

My Texas-bred mom used to annoy me every time I finished a model. I'd show it to her and she would say the same thing every time: "That's a cute li'l feller."

I've read that when going into battle they painted the decks red to hide the blood of the dozens who would be killed. Could be a myth, though.

I believe that was only on the orlop deck where the surgeon worked. A captain could be judged on the brightness of the upper deck since it was expected to have been "holystoned" every day.

@ Tarjack. Very impressive so far!

I guess, but I don't plan to commemorate his death on this model as it is based on the ship as it was launched in 1765, 38 years before his death.

Thanks mum. The decks where not painted red. From my research the only interior parts that were red on Victory were the inside of the gun port hatch covers.

Thanks mate. Long way to go yet and I've still not gotten to the really fiddly bits with the rigging yet.

In the book "HMS Victory" by Noel CLHackney you can read that during the reorganization of the ship in 1800, the gun deck fittings and the gun carriages were painted by instructions of the Admiralty in sunflower yellow, the original red color remains only on the gun ports fittings and the insides of the gun port hatch covers.

BTW:
I build the Victory in 1:100 (Heller kit) ;)

Thanks for the info. Would like to see the Heller version. Do you have any shots?

I'll post another update on mine soon as I've managed to complete a few more stages of construction.

Bow and Stern detailing almost complete. Bowsprit installed and figurehead painted and installed.
