Overclocking my already overclocked 8800gts...

So I have my card overclocked... but I am thinking of going farther...

Current core speed... 580mhz

memory speed 850mhz...

(note my card is an 8800gts 640, its almost 2 years old if age has anything to do with it...)

The real question you have to ask yourself is...

Can I afford a new one ? :yep:

Task Force 07-16-09 08:52 PM

I think overclocking it to 600mhz wont kill it...

yea, they cost as much as a 8700 use to.. (less that 200 dollars I know that)

I dont think i can find the BFG 640mb factory overclocked version anymore though.

Try less than $100 for one much faster than you 8800. Actually, you have a gts model, so i take that back. That one should still hold its own in most cases. You will need to spend $200.

3DMark score - http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/g...core,1340.html

The 8800 gts is on the bottom, but its still not bad since its in 5 digits.

Buy another 8800 GTS and do it with that. They should be cheap these days. I bet that would perform well too!

But I would be better buying 2 gts es, cause this card is 2 years old and probably on its way out the door.

maby nvidias 3xx series cards will come out.:hmmm:

If you do not see smoke you ain't been overclocking. :D

Task Force 07-17-09 12:24 PM

Isnt smoke bad... Ive learnt that with cars... smoke=bad...:rotfl:

What im wondering... if age can slow a GPUs processing speed...

CaptainHaplo 07-17-09 09:31 PM

In theory it could - but in reality you wont see any noticable drop off. Though pushing 2+ year old transistors isnt likely to be the wisest choice, your more likely to pop em due to age than you are to run them as they are and see any significant performance reduction over the time frame.

Overclocking means as Firewall says - can you afford to replace it. Usually you wont hose it as long as you can clock it back down. But the chance remains.

Task Force 07-17-09 09:52 PM

yea, bad idea... it has been overclocked to what it is for 2 years, and it will stay that way...

And if you do see smoke, you may not be overclocking either! Had that happen not to long ago where I bumped a wire to the CPU fan without noticing....

CPU in that machine (my wife's, so almost a catastrophy) still works find though!
