My apologies to the Navy folks. Because of history I just imagined a mechanical arm hovering over a field of peanuts deep in the ocean. I did restrain from mentioning "Billy Beer".

The speculation is about what the mission was, coming into port flying the skull and crossbones after a successful mission is an old submarine tradition dating back to WWI -- somebody in the British government made a speech equating German u-boats with pirates, the British submariners said "oh, we're pirates, are we?" and ran with it, and the tradition spread to the USN.
:arrgh!: |
Also this boat was operating in the Pacific.
