(688i)How can I know target's depth?

Howdy all.

Can anyone tell me what is the best way to know a target's depth?

In 688i, I use sonar and TMA etc to find taret's bearing, range, speed.

But I don't know how can I detect the target's depth in gameplay?

You can't. Its just not possibile.
The most you would be able to infer is wether or not the contact is above or below a thermal layer. But beyond that, you have no way to know the target's depth.

Try using your thermal layer. You can know if a contact is either above it or below it. Which becomes valuable information when using your weapons presets.

If between you and your contact there's a seamount, and you have a good guess of the range of your contact, you can use the seamount to have a raw contact's depth indication, changing your own depth. When the contact disappears from your sonar, mark your depth and then it's trigonometry...

depth(target) = depth(ownship) - distance(target)/distance(seamount)*(depth(ownship)-depth(seamount))

example:
depth(ownship)=800 feet
depth(seamount)=700 feet
distance(target)=7 nm
distance(mount)=5 nm

---> depth(target) = 633 feet
