New French aircraft carrier is to be impressive

France is a major NATO member and ranks the second most powerful European navy behind the Royal Navy.

Recently I have been following the news that France is planning on replacing the venerable Charles De Gaulle aircraft carrier.

The new design is said to be much larger than the current carrier and nuclear powered.

The projected design is said to be 300m long (20m longer than the British carriers) and displace 75,000tons.
This will make it the largest European warship ever built and give France a very nice flagship to head into 2100.
The ship is going to adopt the EMALS aircraft launch system and carry a mixed bag of aircraft from E2D hawkeyes to FCAS jets and drones.

Given its size and also the current arrangement with the USN I would expect to see American jets cross decking on her once built.

The ship is expected to be in the water around 2038 at which point the CDG will be retired from service.

They have announced she will be built in St Nazaire which has quite a history of building large ships from the ocean liners Normandie and Queen Mary 2 to battleship Jean Bart
