Interesting incident in TMO: Another fleetboat helps out the Tang

Interesting incident on last patrol, thought I would share.

Running TMO Update on 100 difficulty, cams off, contacts on.

11 February 1944 NW of Truk

USS Tang, acting on an ULTRA, was in position 70 NM NNW Ulul Island to intercept a convoy. That evening before dusk, made contact on a well screened convoy. Managed to work inside the convoy submerged to the center column, undetected. When TANG popped up to periscope depth from 350 feet, a 6000 ton tanker was 2000 yards away at bearing 035. I began a quick plot showed tanker making 11.5 knots. Fired four MK 14 torpedoes from bow tubes. First hit and igniting the tankers volatile cargo, resulting in massive explosion, other three torpedoes were basically redundant as tanker was finished. As escorts were closing , I was making a last sweep with scope when heard noises of other torpedo impacts, rather distinct sound in TMo with EAX sound sim mod. I checked astern and saw the AK in port column damaged, on fire. I had no time to further investigate, TANG had to run silent and run deep to avoid oncoming escort. I noticed a "ship sunk" marker appeared in location of the AK in the port column.:hmmm:

While dodging depth charges and in the safety of 550 feet of water, began wondering what happened, as all torpedoes TANG fired were from bow tubes(port column was astern of TANG) and all four hit target. The convoy had moved on, but suspected a "sleeper" or two remained above, so continued sweeping with hydrophones. Sound soon reported a new warship contact , I went to check hydrophones and sure enough, the distinct sound of a submarine.

I was running with external camera off so was unable to check but the evidence is pretty clear and only explanation that makes sense. A submerged US AI sub happened to locate the same convoy I did and attacked shortly after me. Pretty cool lol.

I added a few submerged friendly submerged AI subs through the pacific when building the update, so while rare, these things can happen.

Thinking back, only once in testing of mod did this happen, was tracking a ship and it suddenly blew up. Afterward, sound picked up a submarine contact.

I did add a wolfpack to Sea of Japan in 1945 for Operation Barney and followed an ULTRA, they will attack, provided great distraction during attack.

Some point plan to implement US wolfpacks into 1944/45 on larger scale in the campaign, but have some CTD issues with surfaced AI firing US fleetboats to work out first.

With external cam off, this is only screen shot was able to grab.

Extremely interesting! Wish I could run that mod.

I agree, it really was. Wish I had known before and been able to watch through scope, or had external camera on to witness it, still pretty cool though.

Fun to watch when a wolf pack descends on the large convoys.

Hope you can get TMO going sometime, great mod and still improving. FOTRS has AI subs as well, it is where I got them.
