Driveable pt boat mod for sh5?
 
Anyone ever thought of doing a driveable pt or motorboat mod for all nations in this sim?

I would love to see a Schnellboot campaign as much as I would like to see a mine laying campaign or even sail in a convoy as an escort or freighter.

But that is just not possible since this game is part hardcoded so you can only change certain parameters and looks. The base game cannot be changed.

Ashikaga pretty much has it right. SH5 player unit modding is much more difficult for the average modder.

Several months ago somebody was gradually working on a playable Type IX for SH5, so one day it may be done. But definitely not soon.

I did some re-reading of the Type IX for SH5 thread, as well as threads on the GR2 editor - apparently a crude PT boat mod may be possible but it would take a tremendous amount of effort, or good knowledge of Granny. If you want to work on this, I'd recommend getting familiar with Granny's workings and asking people who have modded extensively with the Editor - I have taken baby steps with that stuff but I'm much more familiar with modding SH3 and SH4 using S3ditor.

You will also want to speak with MikIII if or when he starts work again on his Type IX - I remember he was a highly skilled modder but still found it tough going, altering things like torpedo loadout and animated parts. He would be a good source for assistance.

I suppose biggest problem for drivable surface ship in SH5 would be animations, or lack of means to edit them. 3D model of both interior and exterior, menus, various parameters all have been edited in the past but as far as gr2 animations are concerned, I don't recall any succesful attempt to add new ones in SH5.

From SH3 to SH5 VERY few even know how the animations can be changed.
2 Threads that went into DETAIL on animations were pretty much explained.
Nothing came from those. 1 was in the SH3 area and then the SH4 area.
Why should one even explain the SH5 animations?
Not a single person would do the work expecting a tool to make their lives easier!
Animations are not EASY! You gotta put the time in with the proper tools.
I only know 1 person that can do that for SH5.
And I'm not interested at this point on SH5.

I've offered help on new animations for SH4 and heard only crickets.
Name all the new animations added to SH3 and see who's name comes up.

Kind of a strange message is it not?

You seem convinced of your own prowess where it concerns animations and then state you are not interested in explaining it or doing anything in sh5, and also do not post links to the discussions entailing animating in sh3 and sh4.

Do you somehow expect us to shudder at the thought of you not being interested in changing Sh5? Hell I do not even know you let alone know of your work if it at all exists.

The OP wrote about something he liked as an idea. No one asked, demanded or even instigated work should be done yet here you are talking those who are brainstorming about this idea down as if you are some kind of hot shot animator.

Well the only hot shot animators I know personally are at ILM and you ain't one of them.

...and believe me, he's right. Jeff is one of most experienced modders on this forum and helped me and others with modding SH5 on numerous occasions despite not being interested in playing SH5 himself.

Plus, what he wrote in this post is unfortunately true - there's but a handful of people actively modding SH5 and it's hard to find people ready to put time and effort needed even for doing things we already know how to do (like adding non-playable units). It's not surprising that there's little incentive for researching and teaching how to mod animations unless there are people dedicated to do all the work necessary to make use of this knowledge.

Seconded. Hope cool heads can prevail here - Jeff has been a huge help to me with modding .... :up: .... , and I understand the frustration in a way - we don't have the greatest base of modders (sub sims of course are a very niche interest compared to FPS) and a lot of the Silent Hunter series' potential has gone unrealized.

that may be true but the post could be more helpful its only some guy putting an idea out there. Someone needs to take a cold shower.

The answer by him just came across as quite haughty and unnecessary since the OP's question was more of a "would it not be nice if" than a very serious "We NEED this in the game" remark.

You want to talk animations for SH5? Prove to me you have the Tools and skills to handle them!

As to doing a playable PT? Could be done. Few follow through on things like this but it's totally do able!
I'd start with the Schnell Boot for SH3 myself.
And guess who did the animation work for that!
