USS Texas

A couple of weeks ago I got a tour of the USS Texas

USS Texas is currently closed to the public as she is about to undergo a major restoration and dry docking, they plan to move her after hurricane season to dry dock then to a new undisclosed location once the repairs are done.

During the time I was on board I went all over the ship even into many of the spaces not open to the public.

My flicker album has pictures from the ship the links are in my signature.

I am currently writing a 2 part article on my trip into Texas the first part focuses on the history of the USS Texas and is currently available here

In a couple of weeks i will upload the second part which I will detail my trip around her.

Last time I was on the Texas was in ‘84. Never did get to see aft steering. By the picture you posted it looks like it took maybe 8 to 10 sailors to move that rudder.

Visited her in 2008 with Neal, the Grey Wolves and other SubSim members.

The photo below (courtesy of Sailor Steve) shows the only days work Neal has put in over many a year :)

Looking forward to your updates Blair :salute:

Been aboard the Texas twice. 2008 with Jim and others then again back when it was kind of sinking?
We had free roaming on the second visit and I went down to some areas that were flooded!

Is the Texas open to visitors at this time? I might be going by that way in a month or so. Maybe it would be a good idea the plant her in concrete like the Japanese did with Mikasa. Must make maintenance much easier. :hmmm:

Ah, closed, but temporarily open Sept 4th and 5th https://battleshiptexas.org/

Sadly she is closed right now pending major restoration work

As for clapping her in concrete that would be the worst thing to do to her, having seen the problems they face with Mikasa because of it you really dont want to do it.

Also keeping her out of the water would not be an option either.
