A story

3rd of March 1940, 17:00, Grid AL 48

(This is set in somewhat of an alternate history)

"Kaleun we have a problem" Otto Chief Engineer of U-46 reported.
"What could be worse then a destroyed hydophone and damaged battery. Were effectively usless underwater!"

Half an hour earlier they had seemingly struck gold with what seemed to be a completely unescorted convoy. Smith Bergmann the Kaleun of U-46 a type VIIC boat had insisted that they rush an attack against the convoy before any escorts turned up. Ahead full and the Weapon Officer and his two assisstants where lining up a shot on a small merchant and liberty cargo when their was a flash onboard one of the other liberty cargos. * Splash*. A shell landed right next to the U-Boat. Soon another ship was firing on them. Yet Smith pressed on with the attack. No sooner then had the bow tubes been emptied then they landed a perfect shot as the U-Boat was at the crest of wave, destroying the Hydrophone instantly. Then halfway into their dive two more shots were landed causing some hull damge and damaging the battery rechargers. They completed the rest of their dive and went silent in order to avoid detection form any enemy hydrophones. The loss of their hydrophones hurt U-46 badly as they had no way of hearing enemy ships while underwater. The loss of the ability to recharge batteries meant that they would have to use the batteries sparingly or risk losing the ability to move underwater. They moved out of visual range and surfaced the U-Boat. Unknown to smith and his crew both ships they shot at were sunk, however no lives were lost.

"We have sighted a destoryer sir, closing fast from the north."
"Prepare to dive."
"Are you sure sir, diving will mean using up our battery and..."
"Im sure get us under to 30 feet then ill tell you my plan. oh and go silent while your at it.

Part 2

3rd of March 1940, 17:15, Grid AL 48, U-46

U-46 sat 20 feet underwater without any engines. "Sir this is suicide, if they discover us we WILL be destroyed" said a furious Otto Luft. Smith the Kaleun of U-48 had dived after his crew had spotted a destroyer moving fast towards them. Now they were completely silent but if they had been seen or were pinged they would be destroyed without a doubt. "I'm confident my plan will work give us 30 minutes under, in that time get a repair team together" Answered Smith'.
"What exactly will that reapir team do, we cant reapir the damage to the hull..."
"Remind me to get a more obidient officer at port, what the reapir crew will do is try and replace the rechargers"
"Sir, with all due respect we will be relying on 7-9 hours of perfect weather, no enemy ships or airplanes, and we will give up the ability to chase convoys" contributed Rupert, a petty officer currently peforming a routine check-up.
This was true. They would need near perfect weather, and no enemy contact. If they had to dive it would take an extra few minutes to pack up the equipment and parts.

U-46 was motionless, with the water moving around them gently. On the deck Thomas Frankfurter with his small repair team worked as fast as they could to repair the battery recharges. They had been at it for about two hours give or take and had made minimal progress. Smith had retired to the quarters for some sleep, leaving CE Otto Luft in command. Otto had been onboard for U-46s last three patrols, all of which had been highly succesful. Before he came aboard U-46 had been on one patrol, however no enemy ships had been sunk and the engines had blown up just outside of port. His expirience with U-46 had been good after all it was his first assignment. However he disagreed with his kaluens unorthodox methods when dealing with stressful situations. He was gaining quite the reputation serving on U-46, so he didn't speak out against his kaluens actions. Until today when his kaluen had put the entire crew at risk and now he was putting them at risk by refitting the rechargers. Now was his chance to turn the crew against U-46s kaluen and claim captaincy. Turning away from the map mounted on the wall, he went to the bow tubes to plot and scheme.

In the control room Otto had gathered the rest of the officers, two petty officers, the watch captain and five sailors. He planned to gain there trust, turn them against Smith and take U-46 before midnight.
"Friends, I have gathered you here for an emergency meeting. I fear our Kaluen does not have our best interests at heart and if we do not take action soon we may suffer an undesirable fate" started Otto. "I feel it is time we had a change of command"
Luther the Nav stepped foward. "I will back you Otto and so will the rest of the officers."
The watch captain and one of the petty officers also step foward in support of Otto. However the other petty officer and sailors stay back.
"Whats in it for us, we find the Kaleun tolerable" asked one sailor.
"Under my command if you back me you will recieve a medal and a pay rïse"
"Ok we will stand by you"
